Canucks acquire Nick Schmaltz, Paul Stastny
2023-02-09"This is our year, get out of our way, or we will run you over," said the non-Canuck Canucks GM. The non-Canuck Canucks GM was direct in his quote today, a warning to every other team in the league. "We will beat you and we won't be stopped."
Its an interesting choice of words from the GM following a 2 game losing streak and still 3 points back from the league best Jets, but he may be right too. After acquiring both Nick Schmaltz and Paul Stastny, the high scoring Canucks are going to put even more goals into their opponent's nets. Already one of the highest scoring teams in the league, non-Canuck Canucks GM didn't feel there was enough scoring in his lineup.
"Nick and Paul are two very good scorers, and are going to signficiantly increase our offensive depth and allow everyone to score more," he said. "Adding two more players that have already have 40 points is going to add a lot of goals."
Nick Schmaltz is almost scoring at a point per game pace, with 49 points in his 51 games with the Coyotes, including 27 goals. He was the go-to player on the Coyotes, involved in 37% of their goals for the season. Now, he is coming to a Vancouver team, where he does not have to worry about leading the offense. However, his scoring totals are not likely to go down, and getting linemates like JT Miller and Alex Ovechkin are an upgrade that he is certainly going to enjoy.
While Nick is going to have a long journey from Arizona, Paul Stastny's trip is a short one, with only a 3 hour car ride to his new home. Crossing the border from Seattle, Stastny is going to hope the rain keeps falling, and he can keep his momentum going in his new Vancouver home. With 40 points and 19 goals this season, he is on pace for a 60 point season, his best season since 2013-2014 with the Avalanche. At age 37, he is showing no signs of slowing down, and could become another member of the Old Canucks Club, with a potential name change to Alex (like the rest of its members) already working its way through the British Columbia Government.
These two cost the Canucks a lot of draft capital and prospects, and used up most of their remaining cap space. The Canucks also sent some draft picks to the Blackhawks for them to retain 50% of Schmaltz's salary for the next 4 seasons. Rumors of riots are to have broken out in the city of Vancouver, with graphic images from botchristo showing a man breaking the rear window of a police car in his excitement.
"Ask me about how much it cost for Nick in a few months while I'm on the beach with Lord Stanley's cup beside me."
This is likely to be the only moves that they make, as it will be very difficult to make any more moves. However it only takes this move to get the non-Canuck Canucks GM message across; Fasten your seatbelts, the Canucks are speeding to the playoffs and the Stanley Cup.
